How long have you been at Pear Orchard on staff?

This summer I will complete 26 years on staff at POPC.

Where did you grow up?

I was born and raised in the Steel City of Pittsburgh Pa. My paternal Grandfather was the chief engineer of Mesta Machine Co. in PGH and that is where my dad grew up also.

My dad gave me the nickname Chip growing up.

What is a hobby of yours?

I was a competitive tennis player in HS and college and at one time had a ranking in the Jr.. USTA middle states rankings. High school team went 22-0 and won the state championship.

Fun fact?

I ride a unicycle.

One of the best meals you’ve had? Any number of meals in foreign countries as I was there for a mission trip or teaching with new found friends in their homes.

What are you known for?

Proverbs 20:6. Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man, who can find. I would simply like to be known as a faithful servant of Christ, husband, and father, which would be a fulfilling life.

Apart from my marriage and family, the greatest privilege of my life has been to serve at POPC for these 26 years.

Get to know our Women's Ministry Director, Tammie Haynes!

How long have you been at Pear Orchard on staff? We joined POPC in January of 1990, but I've been on staff since June 1, 2015.

Where did you grow up? Starkville.

What are some of your hobbies? Reading, traveling, gardening, "junkin" at flea markets.

Fun fact about yourself: As a youngster, I showed sheep in 4H.

What is one of the best meals you've ever had? One of the best meals I've ever had was the breakfast at Bay Breeze Bed and Breakfast in Fair Hope AL. It was an omelet with fresh caught crab and shrimp from the Gulf with delicious sides. What made it so wonderful was the setting - it was prepared in an outdoor kitchen on the Bay Breeze dock. It was beautiful, peaceful and I had the joy and pleasure of my husband's company. We were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary. A more recent outstanding meal was with children and grandchildren at P-Reaux's in Yazoo, back in January. Shrimp and Oyster po-boy! Evan, Ken, and I drove up to Yazoo a few weeks ago and ordered the same meal curbside. It did not disappoint!!

What are you known for? These days, it may be sitting out on my back patio visiting with women? I would like to be known for being hospitable, welcoming. a lover of the Lord Jesus, His Word, His people, and His kingdom. I need His Spirit at work within me to love this way...His Way!

It's a joy and privilege to be a part of POPC's church staff. I'm very thankful for our church family.

POPC Weekly Update: April 30, 2020

“The faithful are not logs of wood, nor have they so divested themselves of human feelings, but that they are affected with sorrow, they fear danger, and they feel poverty as an evil and persecutions as hard and difficult to be borne. Hence they experience sorrow from evils; but it is so mitigated by faith, that they cease not at the same time to rejoice. Thus sorrow does not prevent their joy, but, on the contrary, gives place to it. Again, though joy overcomes sorrow, yet it does not put an end to it, for it does not divest us of humanity.” — See who said this and why it matters at the bottom.

1. From the pastor’s study…

One of the highlights of ministry for me the past few years has been getting to be a part of the CCS Preschool Come Together time once a week. If you’re ever discouraged, just spend time around preschoolers. They will love you unconditionally, especially if you carry a guitar. I’ve been able to sing songs and recite the Children’s Catechism with them, and see many children grow up out of Preschool into Elementary School over the years.

  • But one big reason that my time with the Preschool has been so meaningful is the encouragement I’ve received from Lanelle Fincher. As you’ll see below, she is retiring after 30+ years of working at our Preschool. I will miss her deeply - and I know that the preschoolers, parents, and teachers will miss her even more than I will. Give thanks to God for how He has used our sister in the lives of so many.

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost May, and that this will be our 8th Sunday worshiping only through live stream. Preaching to a camera is getting old, as is (I hope!) worshiping in your pajamas in your living room. But I’m thankful that God’s word does “not return to Him empty, without accomplishing what He desires, and without succeeding in the matter for which He sent it” (Isaiah 55:11).

  • Pray that the Lord would allow us to gather together soon (please don’t miss the survey in that regard below).

  • Pray that His word would “spread rapidly and be glorified” (II Thessalonians 3:1).

  • Pray also for those saints in the hospital: Mary Helen Perry (low blood pressure), Allene Allen (a growing mass on her liver), and Steve Tackitt’s mother.

  • If you know of other matters for congregational prayer, please email them to Laura Herbison (pray@pearorchard.org).

2. And the Session’s decision is…

Your elders voted this week to continue to cancel gathered corporate worship and on-campus ministries through May 11, unless specific approval has been granted.

The bottom line: For the health of our community, Governor Tate Reeves has asked churches not to meet in person for worship at this time.

What's next: We are making plans now for a phased return, as soon as the way is clear.

  • We recognize that even after we begin gathering for worship, each of you will feel comfortable returning at different points.

  • We will be encouraging those who are sick and at higher risk of COVID to continue to watch our live stream at home.

  • Please fill out this survey to help us as we make our plans!

3. Farewell, Mrs. Fincher!

After over 30 years of service at our Preschool, Lanelle Fincher is retiring at the end of this school year.

Why it matters: This news will be met with great emotion within the CCS community - she has loved and served so well!

  • Countless children have been taught by her and sat at her feet for Come Together time.

  • So many teachers have been mentored in loving our little ones.

  • We will all miss her radiant smile in the halls of CCS!

Say thank you! If Lanelle has impacted your life or the life of your children, please celebrate her with a note, card, or email.

4. Welcome, Winford Lee!

We have recently hired Mr. Winford Lee to our maintenance staff.

Big picture: Our facilities are large and demand expertise and care to steward them well. It’s a great blessing to have Winford join Willie Lane to work under Edwin Lewis, our Building and Grounds Superintendent.

5. Graduating seniors, we want to recognize you.

On Sunday, May 17, we will recognize our graduates in the bulletin.

  • Momentous milestones like graduation have been lost during this pandemic, but we can still rejoice at God’s faithfulness over the years.

What we need from you: If you or your child is a 2020 graduate from high school, college or any post graduate program, please send name, school and degree to Jan Duran at jan@pearorchard.org.

Hence they experience sorrow from evils; but it is so mitigated by faith, that they cease not at the same time to rejoice. Thus sorrow does not prevent their joy, but, on the contrary, gives place to it. Again, though joy overcomes sorrow, yet it does not put an end to it, for it does not divest us of humanity.”  — John Calvin on I Peter 1:6-7

Outreach Opportunity

Here's a great opportunity to partner with our brothers and sisters at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in loving our neighbors! Through this season of pandemic, Ann Smith Elementary is one of 3 Madison county schools giving out breakfast, lunch, and snack food to kids in the Madison County School District. Colonial Heights has been passing out snack packs to help provide some food for the weekends, and we have the opportunity to help them provide these snacks. If you would like to help, please drop off snack food items anytime under the breezeway at the front door of Colonial Heights, or order from Amazon and ship directly to them (444 Northpark Dr, Ridgeland, MS 39157). POPC Weekly Update: 4/3/20

Below you'll find ten important announcements of some of the things going on in the life of Pear Orchard right now. Make sure to scroll all the way down to the list of birthdays! Though we can't see one another in person, we can still text or call and wish our brothers and sisters a happy birthday to make their special day all the more special.

There aren't enough adjectives to describe what we have experienced the past two-three weeks. Unprecedented, unparalleled, staggering, incredible, amazing, wild, crazy, scary - the list could go on and on. We rest in the truth that our sovereign God is on His throne, ruling and sustaining and providing for us according to His holy, wise, and powerful will. My heart was encouraged this morning by Psalm 56. David wrote this Psalm when he was seized by the Philistines in Gath (I Samuel 21), and it's a psalm of confidence in the midst of fear. We live in fearful times as well - yet find strength and boldness in what God's word says: "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid . . . You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book? . . . This I know, that God is for me" (Psalm 56:3-4, 8, 9).

In the midst of this pandemic and sheltering-in-place, our ministry staff know that counseling needs will arise. Though we are not meeting with people face to face currently, we would love to still counsel you by phone or video call. Please don't hesitate to text or email us so we can set up a time to meet with you. May the Lord comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word during this pandemic-- Pastor Caleb

Get to know our organist, Susie Cook!

Cook.jpg

Get to know our organist, Susie Cook!

When did you start working at POPC?

Bill Whitwer interviewed me around 1987. Jerry Norman was choir director at that time.

When did you start playing piano/organ?

My first piano lessons were the summer before entering first grade at Kosciusko Elementary. The teacher was our pastor’s wife. She actually approached my mother with the offer of piano lessons.

From earliest times I was drawn to church music, spending times ‘practicing’ on the top of a trunk at my grandmother’s house. When I was in 9th grade,I took advantage of an offer by the Minister of Music for an introduction to the organ. My first organ book was “You too Can Play the Organ”. The Lord instilled in me a desire to develop His gift and even now I feel that it’s is a miracle’ whenever I’m at the organ. My prayer is that He “play” me.

What are some of your hobbies? I enjoy knitting and cross stitch. It was a joy to be a piano teacher following my retirement from a career with Rehab Services.

Fun fact? I was in the Inquirer’s class with Newell and Sweyn.

Get to know our Facilities Maintenance Director!

Edwin (1).jpg

Staff Spotlight: Get to know our Facilities Maintenance Director, Edwin Lewis! I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi. I've been around the world, but Mississippi is home. I like to spend my free time outdoors and traveling with my children to living history events. Camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, we just like to stay outside. I was an Army Paratrooper, and I have a fear of heights. My grandfather performed the same service to his church as I do for POPC. I have never worked in a more loving environment than our church and school.

ON CAMPUS SERVICES CANCELED FOR MARCH 15

Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This communication comes to you as a decision from the Elders of our congregation after new developments in our state and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our congregants and community, due to the rapidly changing Covid-19 virus situation.

We have decided to cancel all on campus worship services for tomorrow and all ministries of the church on the Lord’s day tomorrow. Nothing at all will be held on campus Sunday March 15th.

However, please note that the staff will host the 8:30 am and 11:00am services on a livestream webcast that may be accessed through our church website link or YouTube. We encourage you to tune in and worship via that assistance with your fellow saints!

Psalm 46 declares that, “God is our Refuge and Strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth give way, though the mountains fall into the heart of the sea... Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted in the earth, and exalted among the nations”.

The Church is much stronger and larger than any health crisis. Our God remains where He has always been, ruling and reigning from His throne of Might over the nations and for the good of His people.

However we must live wisely and prudently in light of the providential situation we are in at this season, and we must live out the royal law of love from our Savior to honor other’s safety even above our own. Cancelling our ministries for tomorrow was a last minute decision because we were hoping to host worship with appropriate cautions in place. But when the Governor of our great state announced a statewide emergency today and specifically requested that churches not hold their large group worship settings in person, we reassessed our decision.

Your elders are meeting at length this coming Monday night to make decisions for the immediate future as it impacts weekly ministries and upcoming services.

We will communicate to you via email blasts, social media and communications from your ministry leaders. Please watch for those early in the week.

Rest assured that this decision was not taken lightly by your elders and staff and that we are monitoring things day by day and will give you as much notice as we can concerning future cancellations, or when we might resume something that has been postponed.

Please call upon the Lord for His mercy on the nations, and watch how you may be the salt and light of Christ to a believer or an unbeliever as these next days unfold.

With great confidence in our Savior, and great delight in you our dear Body of Christ,

Pastor Carl,     for all of your elders.

P.S. Pass the word, especially to some of our older members who may not look at email or social media.
